Jann Gardner

Jann is the Chair of Hunter United Employees Credit Union Ltd, and a nonexecutive director of two insurance companies, StateCover Mutual Ltd and ArchLMI Pty Ltd. She also serves as a member of the Newcastle University Council, the Governing Council of Sancta Sophia College at the University of Sydney, the NSW Nursing and Midwifery Council and the Audit and Risk Committee of SWSLHD.

She has previously served on the Boards of Hunter Water Corporation, the Home Warranty Insurance Scheme, and Hunter Medical Research Institute, where she also chaired the Foundation. In addition, she has held executive director roles in professional service firms and private companies. Previously, she spent 27 years as a lawyer in private practice, the majority of which was as a partner in a national law firm, Sparke Helmore. She was managing partner of Sparke Helmore’s large Newcastle office for 9 years and was a member of the inaugural Sparke Helmore Board.

Currently, she is concentrating on expanding her non-executive director career, while conducting occasional investigations into cultural and employment issues in government departments, as well as mentoring young female students and lawyers.

Jann has an Arts/Law degree from Sydney University and an MBA from Newcastle University. She has specialist accreditation from the Law Society of NSW and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She was the recipient of the hotly contested inaugural Board Diversity Scholarship which was a joint initiative of the Australian Government Office for Women and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She used this to complete the Mastering the Boardroom programme with AICD and was awarded an Order of Merit.
